Kathleen Raine’s careful training of Breanna over the past six years paid off this weekend with victories in both Grand Prix at the Dressage Getaway in Thermal, California.

Equally satisfying for Kathleen is that Breanna–originally named Brentana at the time but changed out of respect to Peggy and Parry Thomas who owned Brentina–was found by her husband, David Wightman, as a four-year-old at the Hanoverian auction and bought with financial help from Dr. Jennifer Mason.

In the Grand Prix on Friday, Kathleen and the 11-year-old mare scored 71.702 per cent with David Blake and Catapult second on 65.106 per cent and Laurie Falvo Doyle on Grand Makana third on 65.106 per cent. On Saturday, the pair improved on their result with a score of 73.404 per cent, while Shannon Peters on Odyssey was second on 70.638 per cent and Nicholia Rose Zamora on Ramsgate D was third on 66.383 per cent.

Kathleen, of Murrieta, California, was reserve on Avontuur for the 1996 Olympics and on Fidelia for the 2000 Olympics.

After Breanna was bought by the partnership of Kathleen, David and Jennifer Mason in 2004, the horse was six-year-old champion at the 2006 Young Horse Western Selection Trials, competed in the U.S. Intermediaire Championships at Gladstone, New Jersey, in 2009 and was U.S. Dressage Federation reserve champion at Intermediaire II in 2010.

A lengthy Intermediaire tour before moving Breanna up to Grand Prix last November, Kathleen said, had helped make her more consistent and dependable. Breanna also had four babies by embryo transfer, one aged 5, one 4 and two three year olds.

“I’m thrilled at the way she has come along,” Kathleen said after the weekend competition that was only the second at Grand Prix for the pair.

She plans another national show before deciding whether to enter a CDI in California, the first of which is in Del Mar in March.

Kathleen, 45, didn’t want to say Breanna might be her next international mount, only “I’m excited for the way she is performing, but a little reserved about the future. We’ll see how it goes. When we’re sure she is ready we’ll move her up.

“She is a really special horse with a huge amount of talent.”
