AACHEN, Germany, July 15–Moorlands Totilas brought silence to the hallowed cathedral of dressage for six minutes before spectators who filled every available space erupted into a celebration fit for a true super star after Edward Gal rode the black stallion to another winning performance in the CDIO Grand Prix Friday.

In the first appearance at the World Equestrian Festival CHIO since 2008 when they were still showing small tour, the world’s No. 1 combination produced a dominating performance that scored 83.860 per cent, more than five percentage points ahead of second placed Dutch team mate Adelinde Cornelissen and Jerich Parzival on 78.541 per cent. The third Netherlands team member, Imke Schellekens-Bartels on Hunter Douglas Sunrise placed fifth on 73.739 per cent.

Great Britain’s Laura Behctolsheimer on Mistral Hojris sparked some of the loudest cheers, an outpouring of emotion and a sea of British flags for her score of 77.259 per cent and third placing by the ground jury of seven that has been increased from the traditional panel of five judges in an effort to improve judging.

Germany’s Isabell Werth on her 2008 Olympic mount Satchmo was the top finishing German in fourth place with 75.836 per cent. However, the rest of the a whole new crop of top riders filled the sixth, seventh and eighth places–Christoph Koschel on Donnperignon at 72.644 per cent, Mathias Alexander Rath on Sterntaler UNICEF at 71.185 per cent and Anabel Balkenhol on Dablino on 71.125 per cent.

Under the new Nations Cup formula, the top six teams advance to the second leg, the Grand Prix Special on Saturday, and they are: The Netherlands, Germany, Great Britain, Belgium, Spain and Canada.

Australia’s Brett Parberry on his World Cup mount Victory Salute provided one of the biggest surprises of the class in which 38 horse and rider combinations started by placing 10th on a score of 70.365 per cent and the top finish for a non-European. Fellow Aussies Hayley Beresford on Relampago do Retiro scored 65.319 for 28th place and Lyndal Oatley on Potifar was awarded 65.106 to finish 30th.

Ashley Holzer on her 2008 Olympic mount Pop Art led the.Canadian team with 69,027 per cent and 13th place with Belinda Trussell on Anton not far behind on 68.024 per cent to fill the 16th spot and Bonny Bonello and Pikardi on on 64.316 per cent for 33rd place.

The USA did not field a team but Americans Tina Konyot on Calecto V and Todd Flettrich on Otto–both horses are Danish warmbloods–performed well in the first Aachen CHIO for both pairs. Tina and the 12-year-old stallion placed 14th on a score of 68.602 per cent that would have been much higher but for an uncharacteristic transition from piaffe to passage that turned into a canter on the final centerline.

Under the new Nations Cup formula, the Grand Prix is only one section with the Grand Prix Special to be held Saturday the second leg to determine the winner.
