WIESBADEN, Germany, May 23–Matthias Alexander Rath and Sterntaler UNICEF confirmed themselves as one of the top German combinations when they narrowly beat Isabell Werth and Satchmo in the Grand Prix for the Special at the Internationales Wiesbadener Pfingstturnier on Sunday.

With Isabell and her 2008 Olympic team gold medal mount and three of his German team mates from the 2009 European Championships in the class, Matthias and Sterntaler scored 73. 915 per cent. Isabell, who was absent awaiting the birth of her son at the Europeans, came second on 73.319 per cent with Spain’s Jordi Domingo on Prestige third on 71.532 per.

Of the four Canadian combinations among the 18 entries in the first leg of their official four-show tour, Belinda Trussell and Anton finished the highest in eighth place with 67.660 per cent. Bonny Bonnello and Pikardi finished 12th on 66.383 per cent, Shannon Dueck and Ayscha 13th with 66.213 per cent and Wendy Christoff and Pfalstaff 17th with 64.085 per cent.

The 2009 team that won bronze at the European Championships comprised Susanne Lebek and Potomac who finished fifth Sunday with 70.851 per cent, Monica Theodorescu on Whisper in ninth with 67.064 per cent and Ellen Schulten-Baumer on a different horse, River of Joy, in seventh place with 68.553 per cent.
