RHEINBERG, Germany, Jan. 26–Fabienne, Isabell Werth’s mount for her victorious 1992 World Cup Final, has been humanely euthanized at the age of 29.

Isabell said in a report on her Internet site that the mare was not feeling well when the rider returned with Warum Nicht FRH from the Amsterdam World Cup qualifier last weekend.

“The nice mare I did win the World Cup Final in Göteborg in 1992 with had lost all her strength and power,” she said. “Before her breakdown she had always been fit and in good shape even she was nearly 30 years old. But now she felt so bad and weak that we had to put her down.

“During the last years she had enjoyed her life with Gigolo, who died last September, in the pasture. Now the two of them can graze together again somewhere up there… I am very sad but I console myself knowing that they both had wonderful retirement here at our place.”

Isabell will ride her Olympic mount Satchmo in the Exquis World Dressage Masters at Palm Beach next week.

She will take her son Frederik, born last October, with her.

“Expecting 27 degrees Celsius (80F) and sunshine will make the trip a nice change to the cold and wintery weather here in Germany,” she said.
