STUTTGART, Germany, Nov. 20–Moorlands Totilas was ridden by Edward Gal of The Netherlands to victory to the applause of the packed stadium Friday in the nine-year-old black stallion’s first Grand Prix in Germany.

The combination was placed first by all five judges for a score of 79.021 per cent, almost 10 percentage points higher than the next placegetter, Germany’s Anabel Balkenhol on the 12-year-old gelding Rubins Royal with 69.319 per cent. Belgium’s Jeroen Devroe on the nine-year-old Apollo van het Vijverhof was third on 68.596 per cent.

“Totilas stole the hearts of the German public,” Edward said of the “really fantastic ambiance” of the arena.

He said not everything in the ride was perfect, but overall it was a “beautiful test” and he was very satisfied.

“Fantastic” and “super” were the words he used to describe the competition and management at Stuttgart.

The European Championship winners were uncertain what sort of reception to expect at the prestigious German Masters CDI5*, their first competition in Germany since appearing in the small tour at the World Equestrian Festival CHIO in Aachen in July, 2008.

“It was a great appearance, even if Gal presented his Totilas still with the hand brake on,“ said tournament director Gotthilf Riexinger.

“Above all, it was good that the spectators provided the Dutch riders with a lot of applause.“

Stuttgart was also the first international competition for Totilas since the European Championhips at Windsor in August.

Gall will ride Totilas in the Grand Prix Musical Freestyle Saturday night.
