ODENSE, Denmark, Oct. 18–Anky van Grunsven and Salinero, displaying some of the brilliance that have won the pair four World Cup titles and two individual Olympic gold medals, on Sunday claimed victory in the inaugural event of the 2009/2010 FEI World Cup West European League.
The Dutch rider and the 15-year-old gelding scored 81.450 per cent to capture the Grand Prix Musical Freestyle at the JBK Horse Show.
Edward Gal of The Netherlands rode the 10-year-old mare Sisther de Jeu, who is stabled in the same barn as the world record creating stallion Moorlands Totilas, in her first World Cup Grand Prix to place second with a score of 80.350 per cent.
Sweden’s Patrik Kittel on his European Championship mount Watermill Scandic HBC, was placed third on 76.250 per cent.
The Odense freestyle is the first of nine qualifying competitions in the highly competitive West European League leading to the FEI World Cup Final in Holland next March.
In the Grand Prix on Saturday, Anky and Salinero scored 73.702 per cent while Edward Gal and Sisther de Jeu finished second with 71.659 per cent and Germany’s Monica Theodorescu and Whisper were third on 71.404 per cent.
Anky said after Sunday’s performance, “I was very pleased with today’s ride. Salinero stood completely still when he was supposed to, and we had some very good extended trots. The horse worked well with me today, but he might have performed better if he had had another competition before this one.”
But she said of her score, “I was disappointed with the points today. I received a total of 81.45 percent, but I felt that we performed as well as we did at the European Championship where I received a better score.”
(Editor’s Note: The pair received a score of 87.250 per cent to win the bronze medal in the Freestyle at the European Championships in Windsor, England, two months ago.)
Anky said she plans to ride her other horse, IPS Painted Black, in some of the World Cup qualifying events and decide later which to compete in the Final.
Edward, who trained for years with Anky, said she was “the best today.”
“Even though my horse was still tense from yesterday,” he said. “I was very happy with the ride. When I tested the music with her one year ago she flipped out, and she didn’t today. She was tense today because there was music in the warm-up area.
“Sisther de Jeu is a very good horse, but she needs more time to develop – more time than Totilas did.”
Patrik Kittel. who placed third, said: “I was very pleased with the ride. My horse was calm, but I made some mistakes. Watermill is still young. The most important thing about a horse is its willingness to perform in the arena, and my horse wants to do just that.”
