VERDEN, Germany, Aug. 9–The Dutch stallion Westpoint ridden by Emmelie Scholtens won the six-year-old championship at the FEI World Breeding Championships in Verden Sunday.
Westpoint, by Jazz, posted a score of 9.0 with Germany’s Florinero by Fürst Heinrich and ridden by Dorothea Schneider second with 8.72 and compatriot Imperio by Connery and ridden by Anna-Sophie Fiebelkorn in third place with 8.42.
To Scholtens, the win was very emotional, as the young rider had her last ride for Larakkers Stable on Westpoint at Verden.
Scholtens is setting up her own stable but hopes the partnership will continue.
“Maybe I can ride him also in the future,” she said. “I never believed that I would win here. Last year we were on 36th place.”
The judges certified Westpoint the best walk in the championship class and gave a 9.0, and 9.5 for his canter.
