Sagacious HF is returning to Florida for treatment of a “summer sore” that has persisted throughout the European competition circuit and rider Caroline Roffman will not compete the horse as an individual in the Nations Cup Grand Prix at Hickstead, England next week
The “summer sore”–habronomiasis is the scientific name–flared up again Monday after Caroline and the 14-year-old KWPN gelding (Welt Hit x Cocktail) performed for the first time in a senior CDI Grand Prix and Freestyle which occurred at the Peterhof Dressur Gala CDI4* in Perl-Borg, Germany senior Grand Prix and Freestyle last weekend.
Caroline of Wellington, Florida and Sagacious came to Europe as the first American combination to compete in the Under-25 division and placed second at the World Equestrian Festival in Aachen, Germany last month.
Sagacious will return to Florida for treatment later this week.
The U.S. Equestrian Federation on Tuesday confirmed the withdrawal of Sagacious.
The “summer sore” is on the right front leg near Sagacious’s ankle and first appeared during the Florida winter circuit when several cases were reported. It flared intermittently, including ahead of the pair’s first European competition at Compiègne, France two months ago.
‘Summer sores” are caused by stomach worm larvae carried by flies into open wounds and can occur year-round in sub-tropical Florida but are rare in Europe. With treatment and patience, veterinarians say, there should be no long term effect.
