Isabell Werth rode Viva Gold OLD to victory in the Lyon, France World Cup Freestyle on a personal best score Friday with Justin Verboomen on Zonik Plus runner-up in the first head-to-head competition of the two 10-year-old stallions.
Isabell and Viva Gold in the third Freestyle since beginning Big Tour nine months ago was awarded 87.890% for the ninth victory at international Grand Prix. The combination’s first place was unanmous by the panel of five judges.
The German superstar, the most decorated equestrian in history, and the chestnut were second in the Grand Prix a day earlier to kick off the second of 10 Western European qualifiers heading to the Final in Gothenburg, Sweden at the end of March.
Isabell is ranked No. 3 in the world behind Justin of Belgium in second and Cathrine Laudrup-Dufour of Denmark at No. 1 who took Western Europe’s 2026-27 opening World Cup qualifier on Mount St. John Freestyle.
Viva Gold is the fifth ranked horse in the world with Isabell’s Wendy de Fontaine, her Olympic and World Championship mount, at No. 4.
Justin and his black Zonik Plus were second on 85.810%, well below the personal best of 91.855% for the pair. The duo was fourth in this year’s World Championships in August, and took gold in the 2025 European Championships Freestyle.
Larissa Pauluis on the 16-year-old Flambeau, with two Olympics to the credit of the Belgian pair, scored 80.530% for third, as they were in the Grand Prix.
The next Western European qualifier is scheduled for Stuttgart, Germany Nov. 11-15.
