MYAKKA CITY, Florida, May 3, 2026–Kevin Kohmann rode the American-bred Sonata to victory in the TerraNova CDI3* Grand Prix Special Sunday for the rider’s sweep on two different horses of the entire Big Tour competition.

Kevin and the 11-year-old American Hanoverian mare (Sir Donnerhall I x Don Principe) scored 70.617% for the Special win two days after riding Sonata to victory in the Grand Prix for the Big Tour debut of the horse bred by Maryanna Haymon. The score was the only one of at least 70% in both the Grand Prix and the Special.

Sonata is owned by Diamante Farms, the Wellington stables of Kevin’s mother-in-law, Terri Kane. He is married to Devon Kane, Terri’s daughter, who rode Vamos into 4th place in the Special on a personal best 67.490%.

Kevin, based in Wellington, won the 3* Grand Prix Freestyle on the 15-year-old gelding Famous on a score of 74.635% with only two combinations in the competition Saturday.

Bianca Berktold, like Kevin a rider brought up in Germany but who is based in Loxahatchee, Florida and now competes under the Stars ‘n’ Stripes, placed second in the Special on the 13-year-old KWPN mare Imperial, on a personal best 68.936%.

This competition was the last qualifier for the U.S. Grand Prix Championships to be staged at the World Equestrian Center in Ocala, Florida beginning in 10 days.

The TerraNova results are unlikely to have a major impact on issuing invitations to 15 combinations to compete in the national championships that are a major step toward choosing a squad for a European tour ahead of the World Championships in Aachen, Germany in mid-August.

Christian Simonson the top ranked American rider on Indian Rock and reserve champion at the World Cup Final last month did not fulfill qualifying requirements for the U.S. championships but is expected to be invited as a “wild card.”

Marcus Orlob on Jane was second on the Dutta Corp. rankings but withdrew when the mare was injured. The pair could be reinstated as team prospects with outstanding performances when the mare is back in competition fitness.
