Matthias Alexander Rath doubled up at the €300,000 World Cup in Mexico, capturing the Grand Prix Freestyle on Destacado FRH Sunday after taking the Grand Prix a day earlier.

Ingrid Klimke from Germany, as is Matthias, was runner-up on First Class in the musical performance with Ecuador’s Julio Mendoza Loor on Jewel’s Goldstrike in third to complete the same top finishes as the Grand Prix in the second dressage World Cup event in Mexico.

Kevin Kohmann of Wellington, Florida on Dünensee, officially 17 years old in January, placed fourth but becomes the top qualifier in North America that could earn him a start in Fort Worth, Texas next April that would be the pair’s third World Cup Final.

Matthias and the 12-year-old stallion scored 79.340% for the win. The rider had competed only once before in North America, 15 years ago on Sterntaler on Germany’s bronze medal team  at the World Equestrian Games in Kentucky.

He and Ingrid, who scored 78.905% on the 13-year-old mare First Class, return home to the Western European League with full points for their geographic region as well as the earnings from what may be the richest non-championship dressage competition in North America.

Matthias and Destacado, whom he rode for reserve world champion as a six-year-old, competed in the 2024 World Cup Final in Saudi Arabia.

For Ingrid this was only her third international show on First Class this year.

Julio Mendoza Loor on Jewel’s Goldstrike, the 14-year-old gelding that were awarded 77.860%, had competed for the rider’s native Ecuador at the Paris Olympics in 2024. Julio is based in North Carolina.

USA’s Kevin Kohmann, based in Wellington and who competed here last year on Dünensee, rode in the past two World Cup Finals. With four championship qualifiers in Florida–three in Wellington and one in Ocala–Sunday’s score of 77.305% and his placing puts Kevin atop North America with fellow Wellington riders Benjamin Ebeling second and Christian Simonson third, among those vying for one of three places reserved for this geographic region at Fort Worth.
