CROZET, France, Aug. 30, 2025–The final showdown of these European Championships that so far have made history and provided surprising hits and misses occurs Sunday with the Grand Prix Freestyle of the top 18 riders and horses.
Competition kicks off at 11:30 am Central European time/5:30 am US Eastern with the last ride scheduled for 14:50 CET/8:50 am US Eastern.
The most anticipated contest appears to be between Denmark’s Cathrine Laudrup-Dufour on the 16-year-old mare Mount St. John Freestyle and Belgium’s Justin Verboomen on his nine-year-old stallion Zonik Plus that go one after the other beginning at 14:30 CET/8:30 US ET.
If either duo wins it will be the first for their nation since the Freestyle was introduced as a separate medal competition in 1991.
Cathrine and Freestyle came into the championships with three straight Freestyle victories, with a score of 91.140% in the last event in February.
Justin and Zonik won the Grand Prix Special for individual gold here on Friday with Cathrine and Freestyle reserve-champion. The Belgian partnership has won three of five Big Tour musical performances with their highest score 89.400% at the Aachen, Germany CDIO5* eight weeks ago.
German team mates are in the Freestyle–championship rookie Katharina Hemmer on the American-owned Denoix PCH and Isabell Werth, the most successful equestrian in history, on Wendy de Fontaine. Fellow German Frederic Wandres on Bluetooth OLD is also in the Freestyle.
Three combinations from Great Britain also are in the Freestyle–Charlotte “Lottie” Fry on Glamourdale, the 2022 world champion partnership, team and individual bronze at last year’s Paris Olympics and victor of the World Cup four months ago, seven-time Olympian Carl Hester on Fame and Becky Moody on her home-bred Jagerbomb was team mate of Lottie and Carl in Paris.
