CROZET, France, Aug. 27, 2025–Katharina Hemmer of Germany on the American-owned Denoix PCH led the European Championships Grand Prix after the first of two days of team competition Wednesday, with Great Britain’s Becky Moody on her Olympic mount Jagerbomb less than a point behind.
Katharina and the 13-year-old Oldenburg gelding were awarded 75.699% in the rider’s first international championships. Denoix, owned by Nancy Gooding of Larkspur, Colorado, was developed by German team gold medalist Hubertus Schmidt before turning the horse over to Katharina, his assistant trainer, three years ago.
Becky Moody and her home-bred Jagerbomb, 11-year-old gelding that were a last-minute addition to Britain’s Olympic team that earned bronze in Paris last summer, scored 74.829%.
Denmark, that along with Germany and Britain is a favorite to stand on Thursday’s medals podium, got off to a strong start with championship rookie Nadja Aaboe Sloth on her 12-year-old Danish Warmblood gelding Favour Gersdorf scoring 71.227% and third overall.
Katharina said after the ride: “Denoix was super focused, with great highlights and a fantastic riding feel. I’m really pleased that our championship debut went so well.
“He’s been totally relaxed the last few days and felt at ease from the very first moment. He’s completely chilled out in the stable, he grazes, and is easy to ride. On the very first day, he rolled around in the lungeing circle–I promised him he’d be allowed to do that again after the test today. A horse only does that when it’s truly comfortable. Even directly after the test, he stood there completely relaxed with his ears pricked, just like during the vet check. If he’s tense, you notice it immediately because he doesn’t stay as calm. But today, you had the feeling he knew exactly that he’d done well.”
The top ranked riders and horses will compete Thursday: Isabell Werth and Wendy de Fontaine and Frederic Wandres and Bluetooth OLD for Germany; Carl Hester and Fame and Charlotte “Lottie” Fry and Glamourdale for Great Britain, and Andreas Helgstrand and Jovian and Cathrine Laudrup-Dufour and Mount St. John Freestyle for Denmark.
The first day of the Europeans held once every two years had a bumpy start for some combinations.
Ingrid Klimke, a five-time eventing Olympian with two team gold medals, was not so fortunate on Vayron NRW, the 14-year-old Westfalen stallion she took over from Daniel Bachmann Andersen who had ridden Vayron on Denmark’s silver medal team at the Paris Olympics.
The ride by Ingrid was marked by mistakes including a break in the extended trot across the diagonal and the second pirouette that brought down her score to 69.438%. She explained later that Vayron, the first horse to return to competition after a break to drag the arena, is sensitive to differences in the footing and detected marks left by the drag.
Great Britain’s Andrew Gould on the 12-year-old Dutch-bred stallion Indigro was eliminated shortly after the start of the ride when the horse was determined to be not fit to continue that reduced the team to the minimum of three horse and rider combinations.
