Sabine Schut-Kery, the Tokyo Olympic team silver medalist, has been awarded the $25,000 Carol Lavell Advanced Dressage Prize.

Sabine plans to use the award for intensive training of Sonnenberg’s Jersey, a 10-year-old Dutch Warmblood stallion, with her longtime coach and mentor, Christine Traurig.

She will also used the award for video lessons on the horse owned by Gina and Dan Ruediger of Oregon, with German-based trainer, Jan Nivelle, and participate in clinics with Lilo Fore.

Sabine, 56, and Sonnenberg’s Jersey were the U.S. Festival of Champions Intermediate 1 champions

“I am beyond excited and grateful to receive this year’s Carol Lavell Advanced Dressage Prize for Sonnenberg’s Jersey! This generous prize from The Dressage Foundation will give me more concentrated training to help me develop Jersey toward Grand Prix,” she said. “Without this grant, our education would be limited, and we could not receive the training needed to reach the highest levels of the sport. I am extremely excited about Jersey’s potential and our future together.”

Sabine developed Sanceo, a Hanoverian stallion, from a youngster to competing at the World Young Horse Championships as a six-year-old in 2012, team gold at Small Tour at the 2015 Pan American Games and placing third individually to lead the United States to team silver at the Tokyo Olympics.

The Carol Lavell prize provides financial assistance for coaching and training to talented, committed, proven horse and rider combinations with the ability and plans to reach and excel at international high performance dressage. Since 2009, the fund has awarded 25 grants totaling $625,000 in support of U.S. high performance teams.
