PARIS, Sept. 7, 2024–Fiona Howard on Diamond Dunes and Rebecca Hart on Floratina capture Freestyle gold, Kate Shoemaker on Vianne takes bronze to cap an historic performance by USA to close out Paralympic Games dressage,
The United States completed their most successful Games with a total of five gold medals, one silver and one bronze–two individual and two freestyles golds, their first ever team gold, an individual silver and a freestyle bronze.
Fiona and Diamond Dunes scored 81.994% to win the Grade II freestyle, Rebecca Hart and Floratina were awarded 83.534% to top Grade III and Kate Shoemaker on Vianne received 80.170% for bronze in Grade IV.
The two American gold medalists for their musical performances also won individual golds and were on the gold medal team.
The 25-year-old Fiona Howard said: “When I came into these Games, I just wanted to put down the best tests I could. It was my first Paralympic Games and I just wanted to do my best and help out the team. But this has gone above my expectations.
“On the third day, you have to dig a little deep because my muscles are definitely tired, but I have such a great partner in Diamond Dunes and he knows his job. He gave me everything, just like the past two times. I couldn’t have asked for any more.”
Rebercca, Hart, 39, said after posting the highest individual score of the four days of competition, “That was so wonderful. I was a little concerned when we started cantering but I was like ‘she will come back to me, she always does’. It’s just electric. I told her she was fine. She went ‘are we OK?’ and I said ‘yes, we’re fine’ and she said, ‘OK, I trust you’ and it was such a magical moment. Then we hit the markers the way we needed to.”
