WAYNE, Illinois, Aug. 19, 2023–Sabine Schut-Kery rode Sonnenberg’s Jersey to victory in the United States Festival of Champions Prix St. Georges Monday for the star Tokyo Olympic rider’s unbeaten record on the 10-year-old black stallion since capturing the developing Small Tour title a year ago.
Sabine and Jersey (Vivaldi x Olympic Ferro) were awarded 73.441% for the win in the first of three competitions for the Intermediate 1 championship. It was the pair’s 21st win in 22 starts since their first competition–mostly national events in California–in June 2023.
At this same championship a year ago, Sabine and Jersey, owned by Sonnenberg Farm of Sherwood, Oregon, was developing Prix St. Georges champion.
The horse was initially competed by Kimberly Pap of the Netherlands whose success included placing first in the World Young Horse Championships small final as a seven-year-old.
Olivia LaGoy-Weltz on the nine-year-old Hanoverian mare Fade to Black was runner-up on 70.677%.
Olivia, of Haymarket, Virginia, was second on Fade to Black (Fantastic x St. Moritz) in the U.S. seven-year-old championships in 2022. The horse is owned by Mary Anne McPhail.
