WIESBADEN, Germany, May 19, 2024–Emilio at age 18 was retired Sunday night after ridden by career-long partner Isabell Werth to victory in the pair’s 96th Grand Prix over a decade.
Isabell announced the retirement of the Westfalen gelding (Ehrenpreis x Cacir AA) owned by Madeleine Winter-Schulze and Isabell after the musical performance under lights.
Isabell and Emilio won both the Grand Prix and the Freestyle at Wiesbaden to bring the number of career victories to 56.
Isabell, the most decorated equestrian in Olympic history, partnered with Emilio beginning at Small Tour in 2014 and moved up to Grand Prix the following year.
Emilio was never competed by Isabell at a championship and the only team competition was to lead Germany to gold at the Nations Cup in Aachen, Germany in 2018.
However, she frequently praised Emilio for performing at high sport at times when the rider was without a premier level mount.
