DEL MAR, California, Aril 14, 2024–Steffen Peters on Suppenkasper won the Del Mar CDI4* Grand Prix Special Sunday with the judges split, two of the five placing Anna Buffini on Fiontini first.

Steffen and the 16-year-old “Mopsie” that he’s seeking to take to their second Olympics after earning silver at Tokyo scored 73.234% for the win–with two judges placing the pair second on 71-plus%, one on 72.447%, one at 73.234% and the USA’s Jane Weatherwax awarding the top mark of 76.915%.

Anna Buffini and the 14-year-old mare Fiontini were awarded 71.766%–with Maria Colliander of Finland and Mariette Sanders-van Gansewinkel of the Netherlands placing the duo first, both on 72-plus%

Anna and Fiontini in only their sixth CDI start and second Grand Prix Special made a mistake in the nine two-tempi changes that received four marks of 4 and one of 3 while the one-tempi changes immediately following were error-free and scored between 7 and 7.5.

The partnership received 27 marks of eight from the ground jury and one of nine.

“If I hadn’t made a mistake it would’ve been a big score,” Anna told dressage-news.com.

“Going to go home and keep working until those mistakes lessen and the big score comes.

“Learned a lot and more determined than ever to show how incredible this horse is and keep getting her scores higher.”

Anna plans to sit down with her trainer, Günter Seidel, and her family to plan the immediate future ahead of a CDI set for Temecula, California the first week of May that along with one at TerraNova in Florida will be the last in the qualifying period for a squad of up to eight to go to Europe to compete for selection for a team of three at the Paris Olympics beginning at the end of July.

Steffen, who will take Suppenkasper to two Olympics as he did with Ravel in 2008 and 2012, said he was “very happy” with Mopsie despite tension.

“Unfortunately, some tension in the passage canter transitio and a flying change before before the right pirouette,” he told dressage-news.com.

“Mopsie is taking a well deserved two-week break.”

With scores that have already likely already qualified the combination at the top of the U.S. Olympic standings, he is skipping the Temecula event.
