GOTHENBURG, Sweden, Feb. 24, 2024–Domien Michiels on Intermezzo van het Meerdaalhof won the World Cup Grand Prix Freestyle Saturday, the first Big Tour victory for the Belgian rider and the gelding he has partnered for eight years.
Domien and the 15-year-old Belgian Warmblood were awarded a personal best 78.300% for the win in the pair’s second qualifier this season to give them a total of 27 points toward qualifying for the Final in Riyadh in April, well off the number needed to earn one of nine places for Western Europe. They finished 11th at Mechelen two months ago.
Sweden’s Maria von Essen on Invoice, winner of the Grand Prix Friday, were runner-up on 76.200% with Spain’s Borja Carrascosa on Sir Hubert NRW third in 75.630%.
The last West European qualifier is scheduled for ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands Mar. 7-10.
