Steffen Peters, pursuing his sixth Olympic start, was admitted to the hospital with blood clots in his lungs and left leg.
The 59-year-old rider who has been one of America’s top riders for three decades. was released Tuesday night from Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego, near where Steffen is based.
“I have blood clots in my lungs and left leg,” he told DRESSAGE-NEWS.com.
“Unfortunately, very painful.
“I hope to be back in the show arena early January.”
Steffen’s hospitalization forced cancellation of two masterclasses scheduled in Australia this week.
Steffen stands atop United States dressage qualifications for the Olympics in Paris next summer.
He earned the early top spot with Suppenkasper, his Tokyo Olympic and 2018 World Equestrian Games team silver medal partner, with victory in the World Cup in Thermal, California last month.
Steffen’s career of five Olympics range from his first on Udon in 1996, on Ravel at the Beijing Games in 2008 and London 2012 and Legolas in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.
He also was only the second American to become World Cup champion, which he did on Ravel at Las Vegas in 2009.
