SANTIAGO, Oct. 22, 2023–The United States was leading with Brazil close behind and Canada third after the first day of the Pan American Games Sunday with team gold to be decided Monday.

The 21-year-old Christian Simonson on Son of a Lady launched USA’s bid for team gold by topping the Prix St. Georges results with 73.328%.

However, Brazil’s João-Victor Marcari Oliva on Feel Good VO, an 11-year-old Westfalen stallion, was atop the Grand Prix standings on 76.478%, slightly ahead of USA’s Sarah Tubman on her 2019 individual Pan Am gold medal mount First Apple, 13-year-old KWPN stallion, on 76.065%. the Grand Prix results included 3% bonus points.

João-Victor, who is based in Portugal, said after the ride, “I didn’t really expect this. I was expecting to bring another horse but I had to change last week because the horse was not in the best shape so I had to bring this horse which is my second option–I expected to do a clean test, help my team, maybe get a medal from the team but not to win! I’m really happy.

“I was crying after my test! I think I made my team proud, my trainer, my family and my country and this is what matters.”

Fellow Brazil Grand Prix team combination of Renderson Silva de Oliveira and the 13-year-old Lusitano stallion Fogoso Campline were lying third on 75.304% with Anna Marek of USA on Fire Fly, 13-year-old KWPN gelding, in fourth on 74.891%.

Highest placed Canadian at Grand Prix was Naïma Moreira Laliberté on the 16-year-old Hanoverian gelding Statesman with 72.739% at Grand Prix.

The United States was atop the team totals after the first day of Prix St. Georges and Grand Prix with 224.338. Brazil was 2nd on 221.151, Canada third on 214.277, Chile 4th on 209.920, Mexico 5th with 202.882, Argentina 6th at 201.609, Colombia 7th on 197.205 and Ecuador 8th at 140.229.

Two nations will earn a 2024 Paris Olympic team start. USA is the only country in the Americas to have qualified a dressage team for the Paris Games.

Christian Simonson described his first senior championship ride on the 12-year-old Danish Warmblood, as “super special” and fulfillment of a “childhood dream.”

He was coached on-scene by Katie Duerrhammer. Adrienne Lyle, his regular trainer who gave birth to her first child three weeks ago, described Katie’s coaching of Christian as “superb.”

“She has been watching his lessons all summer and shadowed us at Lamplight (Festival of Champions where Christian took the Intermediate 1 championship) and has done an amazing job stepping in to coach.”

Sara Tubman said going into the arena produced the “craziest butterfly feelings” but the ride on First Apple produced a personal best 73.065% (+ Pan Am 3% for 76.065%).

First Apple’s development from Small Tour in 2019 to Grand Prix was “not a small journey” and was proud of their partnership as she said it seemed she needed pressure to produce her best.

The second day of the team contest will be at Intermediate 1 for Small Tour and Special for Grand Prix.
