RIESENBECK, Germany, Sept. 10, 2023–Jessica von Bredow-Werndl rode TSF Dalera BB to victory in the Grand Prix Freestyle Sunday for a sweep of the gold medals at the European Championships. Charlotte “Lottie” Fry on Glamourdale was runner-up for silver and fellow Briton Charlotte Dujardin on Imhotep took bronze. All three were personal best scores.
Jessica, who led the German team to gold as well as winning individual gold by taking the Grand Prix Special, scored 92.818% to win the Freestyle on the 16-year-old Trakehner mare on which she was Tokyo Olympic champion.
“I was so happy with my first entrance that I forgot to give the right aids in the ones,” she laughed. “But anyway, the most important word for today… is just thank you. Thank you to my dancing partner. She is the most reliable and honest and athletic partner you could wish for.”
“Lottie” Fry came into these championships for the much-anticipated first head-to-head competition with Jessica and Dalera. Jessica was out of the sport pregnant with her second child when Glamourdale, now 12 years old, won the World Championship a year ago.
She was on the British team that won gold Thursday, but was out of the Grand Prix Special medals.
“I guess a little relief that we’re back on the podium,” she said after becoming runner-up on 92.379% for the musical performance, “but I think it’s mainly just excitement. And yeah, I’m just super happy. The feeling that he gave me in there today, I was like, okay, we’re really back on track now. And the first two tests maybe weren’t like I had hoped they would be. But yeah, today it was the most incredible feeling. And yeah, I’m pretty speechless, to be honest.”
Bronze went to Charlotte Dujardin on the 10-year-old Imhotep, the gelding that she competed at only three events this year after gving birth to her first child, Isabella, six months ago.
Coming into today it was very, very exciting,” she said.
She she received her new music just this week to replace scores she had previously from Valegro’s catalog.
Today, she said was the first time she rode the new music from Tom Hunt.
“I just was so excited to ride today because I knew how to fight the top three to get a medal,” she said she thought. “It’s going to be incredible. We’re going to fight to the bitter end for that medal, for those top three medals. And I mean, the scores there, oh, I mean, you know, it’s so close.
“And, you know, for me to go out there today in a full crowd, I mean, how is it? It’s so, for me, it’s the biggest buzz to go out there in that sort of atmosphere, ride out to a full crowd.”
