WAYNE, Illinois, Aug. 21, 2023–Christian Simonson on Son of a Lady won the Festival of Champions Prix St. Georges Monday to kick off week-long national championships at Lamplight Equestrian Center in this Chicago suburb.

The 20-year-old Christian based in Wellington, Florida scored 72.764% on the 12-year-old Danish Warmblood gelding in the first of three competitions leading to the Intermediate 1 title and possibly his first senior championship team. He is long listed for the Pan American Games on Son of a Lady and Zeaball Diawind.

Charlotte Jorst of Reno, Nevada who maintains her competition horses in Wellington was runner-up on Federle, a nine-year-old Hanoverian mare, on 71.793%.

Nora Batchelder of Williston, Florida on the eight-year-old Oldenburg mare Nova placed third on 70.970%.

Christian and Zeaball Diawind, 11-year-old Danish Warmblood gelding, placed sixth on 70.646% in the St. Georges Monday.

Charlotte is long listed for the Pan Ams on Zhaplin Langholt, a 10-year-old Danish Warmblood gelding, on which she placed fifth on 70.734% in the St. Georges.

The festival includes national championships of Grand Prix, Int. 1, Brentina Cup Under-25, developing St. Georges and developing Grand Prix, plus youth rider and young horse divisions.

However, with American riders devoting more time to competing in Europe in recent years, the role of the festival in team selection has diminished.
