BALVE, Germany, June 9, 2023–Sönke Rothenberger and the nine-year-old Fendi won the German Championships Grand Prix Friday, edging world No. 1 Jessica von Bredow-Werndl and TSF Dalera BB into the runner-up spot.
Sönke and the Danish Warmblood stallion were awarded 79.760% by the all-German ground jury at the national level competition. The pair began international Big Tour last October and won both the Grand Prix and the Special in their sole CDI this year, at Hagen, Germany.
Jessica and the 17-year-old mare Dalera, unbeaten in international competition since sweeping the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, scored 79.400%, with two of the five judges placing them second and three placing Sönke and Fendi first. There were mistakes in both the one- and two-tempi changes for Jessica and Dalera that most recently won the World Cup in Omaha, their second straight annual championship.
Frederic Wandres and Bluetooth OLD were third on 77.540%. Frederic and the 13-year-old Oldenburg gelding have won all eight international starts so far this year, six of them at Wellington, Florida in the rider’s third year at the Global Dressage Festival.
