Julio Mendoza Loor of Ecuador is the 19th ranked rider in the world in the FEI (International Equestrian Federation) standings as of the end of May. Jewel’s Goldstrike, his horse, is No. 21.
The rankings for Julio, who is based in Columbus, North Carolina, and Goldstrike comes after eight straight victories–six count for the rankings to earn 1,566 points–at Wellington and Ocala in Florida and Lexington, Virginia this year. Julio was ranked 30th at the end of April and ended 2022 at 323rd.
The rankings for both Julio and Goldstrike, 12-year-old KWPN gelding, are the highest for a South American combination since the new standings system that separates riders and horses was begun last September.
Brazil’s João Victor Marcari Oliva was the previous highest ranked South American in the same period.
There were only minor changes in the top 10 standings headed up by Jessica von Bredow-Werndl of Germany and TSF Dalera BB, with Charlotte “Lottie” Fry No. 2 as was Glamourdale, and Isabell Werth and Emilio both ranked third.
Gareth Hughes of Great Britain jumped to 20th from 39th while Norway’s Isabel Freese shot up to No. 34 from 178th.
