AMSTERDAM, Jan. 28, 2023–Holland’s Dinja van Liere rode Hermès to a personal best score to win the World Cup Grand Prix Freestyle Saturday and a likely start in the Final in Omaha while Isabell Werth on Emilio was runner-up to put her at the top of a group of Germans battling for an invitation to the championship.
Dinja and the 11-year-old KWPN stallion scored a personal best 87.055% for the Western European League win that was popular before the home crowd. The 2022 world championship bronze medal duo won the Grand Prix a day earlier.
Isabell and Emilio, 17-year-old Westfalen gelding, were runners-up on 86.595% as they were in the Grand Prix. The most successful equestrian rider in history earned enough points to give her the lead among German riders battling for one of two possible places–Jessica von Bredow-Werndl on TSF Dalera BB fills one place for Germany as the defending champion.
Isabell won the inaugural World Cup qualifier in Omaha on Weihegold OLD as the first in a run of three titles and a return to the American Midwestern city would be her 23rd start at a World Cup Final over the past three decades.
The results Saturday moved Isabell ahead of compatriot Ingrid Klimke, an Olympic gold medal event rider, who placed fourth on the 15-year-old Hanoverian stallion Franziskus with a personal best score of 84.960%.
Denmark’s Nanna Skodborg Merrald placed third on Blue Hors Zack also with a personal best score, 85.220%, to extend the rider’s lead as the top Dane.
The next World Cup qualifier in Western Europe is in Neumünster, Germany Feb. 16-19.
