EXLOO, Netherlands, Jan. 6, 2023–Lottie Fry, world No. 1 rider, won the CDI3* Grand Prix Freestyle Saturday for the first Big Tour victory on Don Joe after capturing the Special on Dark Legend following the win in the Grand Prix a day earlier.
The British rider and the 11-year-old KWPN stallion Don Joe were awarded 77.895% for the debut Grand Prix musical performance.
Just 2 1/2 hours earlier, Lottie as Charlotte is known, rode the 15-year-old Dark Legend to the win on 74.298% in the Special. The duo began this first international dressage event of 2023 by claiming the Grand Prix on Thursday.
Lottie, who has been competing Don Joe internationally since the five-year-old world championships in 2017, moved the horse up to Grand Prix in March last year and competed at only two shows before Exloo.
This was also the first competition since she ended 2022 as the top ranked rider in the world.
In the year, the 26-year-old Lottie rode Glamourdale to world championship individual and freestyle gold medals then at swept the London World Cup and then did the same on Everdale in the Mechelen, Belgium qualifier for the championship to be held in Omaha in April.
Lottie is based in the Netherlands as the rider for Van Olst Horses. All her competition mounts are owned by Van Olst.
In the Freestyle, the Netherlands’ Lynne Maas on Electra, 14-year-old KWPN mare, scored 75.925% for second.
Charlotte Heering of Denmark on Bufranco, 17-year-old gelding, was third on 75.030%.
Fellow Briton Annabella Pidgley, 18 years old, was runner-up on 73.276% in the Special with Denmark’s Daniel Bachmann Andersen on Vayron in third on 72.766%.
