LONDON, Dec. 16, 2022–Charlotte Fry rode Glamourdale to a personal best score of 90.995% Friday to win the World Cup Freestyle. World Championship team mate Gareth Hughes on Classic Briolinca was reserve.
Britain’s world championships double gold medal winning partnership , dominated the World Cup short Grand Prix Thursday with team mate Gareth Hughes on Classic Briolinca runner-up.
Competing the 11-year-old KWPN stallion Glamourdale in Charlotte’s homeland for the first time and four months since the world championships, the pair received scores above 90% from all five judges. The score beat the result of 90.654% in the world championships four months ago that earned one of two gold medals and a team silver.
The duo were awarded 22 marks of the maximum of 10, all five judges awarding the score for extended canter and also for music and interpretation.
The 26-year-old Charlotte, based in the Netherlands, is one of only 10 rider and horse combinations in the history of dressage to score above 90%. The world record of 94.300% set by Britain’s Charlotte Dujardin on Valegro eight years ago almost to the day and the top score of 92.300% by Edward Gal on Totilas on Dec. 15, 2009 were also in London, at the Olympia stadium.
The winning couple led Britain to team silver and won both individual and freestyle gold medals at the world championships in Denmark four months ago.
“After last night I could feel he was in great form,” Charlotte said of her Grand Prix victory, “he has really strengthened up since Herning and tonight he was so keen that he tried to go into the ring before he was supposed to because he was so excited.
“The support from the crowd tonight was incredible, and to end this amazing year here is wonderful! It is almost impossible to sum up 2022–it has been incredible and coming to London and performing in front of my home crowd is the best feeling and the best way to end the year.
“I had such an easy, fun ride. He is better than he was in Herning and we keep improving so I can’t wait for the years to come. Paris (Olympic Games 2024) is for sure the goal, and we will see how it goes until then.”
Gareth Hughes and Classic Briolinca, the 16-year-old KWPN mare that he rode on the championship team with Charlotte and Glamourdale, scored a personal best 84.590% in the freestyle to place second as they did in the Grand Prix.
The scores for the two Britons were their first in this season’s World Cup circuit leading to the Final in Omaha in April.
Ingrid Klimke and Franziskus of Germany placed third on 83.170% to earn enough points to move to the top of the Western European standings on 55 points, five points ahead of German team mate Benjamin Werndl who is not competing here. The eventing star and the 14-year-old Hanoverian stallion that were on Germany’s bronze medal team at the world championships, already have two World Cup qualifier wins.
This was the sixth of 12 qualifiers in Western Europe for riders to earn one of nine starting places at the Omaha Final. The next is scheduled for Mechelen, Belgium Dec. 26-30.
Charlotte said she plans to ride Everdale, her Tokyo Olympic and 2021 European Championship mount, at Mechelen.
