KRONENBERG, Netherlands, Dec. 2, 2022–Annabella Pidgley rode Gio to a successful Big Tour debut for both rider and horse Friday for third place in the competitive Peelbergen CDI3* Grand Prix.
The first international Grand Prix outing for the 18-year-old Briton and Gio that partnered a year ago was awarded 73.630%.
Marlies van Baalen of the Netherlands and Habibi DVB, 10-year-old KWPN gelding also making its Big Tour debut, earned 73.956% to top the field of 39 starting combinations.
Patrik Kittel, a three-time Olympian for Sweden, and Delaunay, a 16-year-old Oldenburg gelding, scored 73.761% for the win . The pair competed at the 2017 European Championships and the World Cup Final in 2019.
Gio, 11-year-old KWPN gelding, was found by Britain’s Olympic star Charlotte Dujardin at a masterclass in Los Angeles in 2016 and with New Zealander Renai Hart bought the gelding. Five years later, Charlotte and Gio led Great Britain to team bronze and also Freestyle bronze at the Tokyo Olympics followed by team silver and Freestyle bronze at the European Championships two months later.
Annabella has been successful at European pony and junior rider championships over the past four years.
Until Friday, she had not competed internationally beyond the youth divisions. She began 2022 as a junior rider and made her CDI young rider debut in October.
