Steffen Peters and Suppenkasper won the Schafhof CDI4* Grand Prix in Kronberg, Germany Friday in the final event for the American partnership before the world championships in three weeks.

Germany’s Isabell Werth and DSP Quantaz placed sixth on the lowest score for the pair in three years at Big Tour and behind the American pair Sarah Tubman and First Apple.

Steffen of San Diego, California and the 14-year-old KWPN gelding, scored 74.630% for the win. The only other victories for the pair in Europe were the Grand Prix and the Special in Luxembourg three years ago.

Steffen is the most experienced U.S. rider with five Olympics and four world championships, including the team silver medal performances at the Tokyo Games and 2018 World Equestrian Games on Suppenkasper or “Mopsie” as the horse is nicknamed.

“A good test today,” he told dressage-news.com after the ride, “but ridden a little on the careful side, especially the canter tour.

“Our goal was to ride a clean test and that was almost the case except the transition out of the second piaffe was not as clean as it could be. The rest was very good. Mopsie received high scores for canter extensions, the trot tour at the beginning was very good.

” Overall a very good feeling to take to Herning if we are selected for the team.”

Belgium’s Laurence Venommslaghe and Edison, 13-year-old KWPN gelding, were awarded 72.630% for runner-up.

Germany’s Hubertus Schmidt and Beryll, a 12-year-old Hanoverian gelding, were third on 72.283%.

Fellow German Christoph Koschel on Dünensee, the 13-year-old Hanoverian gelding owned by Diamante Farm of Wellington, Florida was fourth on 71.109%.

The USA’s Sarah Tubman and First Apple, 12-year-old KWPN stallion, placed fifth on 70.326%.

Sarah and First Apple, Pan American Games individual gold medalists in 2019, are on the short list for the American team at the world championships in Herning, Denmark.

Isabell Werth and Quantaz, 12-year-old German Sport Horse stallion, had difficulties in the second passage-piaffe tour with several marks of one point and a final result of 69.478%.

This is the second competition this month in which the duo has had issues, being eliminated with blood in the mouth from the Grand Prix Special at the Nations Cup in Aachen, Germany. The combination is one of eight German pairs nominated for Herning, with the team of four riders and horses to be named in the next 10 days.
