THERMAL, California, Nov. 19, 2021–Karen Pavicic rode the Canadian-bred Totem to victory in the Desert Dressage CDI3* Grand Prix Friday, the first Big Tour competition for the partnership.
Karen, who rides for Croatia, and the nine-year-old Hanoverian gelding scored 69.391% for the victory.
Jan Ebeling of Moorpark, California and Status Royal OLD placed second on 67.304% with Aaron Janicki of Mount Vernon, Washington on Heron third on 67.087%.
Karen and Totem had previously only competed at international level in Wellington, Florida. The pair’s first international competition was as a six-year-old in 2018. The pair moved up to Small Tour early in 2021 and was competing at Intermediate II by the end of the Global Dressage Festival in March.
Karen, based in Vancouver, Canada and who switched to ride for Croatia instead of Canada four years ago, has owned Totem since a foal bred by Patricia Close of North Gower, Ontario. She shares ownership with her husband, Thomas Baur.
Karen competed Don Daiquiri for Canada at the 2014 World Equestrian Games in Normandy, France.
