HERNING, Denmark, Oct. 23, 2021–Crowd favorite Cathrine Dufour and Cassidy won the World Cup Grand Prix Freestyle Saturday night, holding off a challenge from Danish teammate Carina Cassøe Krüth on Heiline’s Danciera posting a personal best score for reserve champion.

Cathrine and the 18-year-old Danish Warmblood gelding received a standing ovation as they left the arena with a score of 87.115%, just 0.72 ahead of Carina and Danciera on 86.395%.

Cathrine and Cassidy received marks of 10 from single judges for music and choreography and two 10s for the right canter pirouette. Carina and Danciera also received 10s for choreography and music and a 10 for halts.

Cassidy who has been partnered for virtually his entire life with Cathrine was the oldest horse in the competition that kicked off the World Cup Western European League leadiong to the Final in Leipzig, Germany next April. The pair that has been a star since European Junior Championships in 2010, went to the 2016 Olympics and earned medals at the 2017 and 2019 Europeans had not competed since February 2020 as Cathrine focused on Bohemian for the Tokyo Games. She and Bohemian are ranked No. 2 in the world.

The result for the Olympic combination of Carina and Danciera, a 10-year-old Danish Warmblood mare, surpassed their previous best of 84.455% posted a year ago.

Dinja van Liere of the Netherlands and the nine-year-old Hermes, the youngest horse competing, set the tone of the final group with a score of 84.360% that put them in third place in their first World Cup event. Dinja and Hermes, a KWPN stallion, were awarded a mark of 10 for piaffe but a mistake in the two times tempi changes reduced their score.

The next World Cup Western European qualifier is in Lyon, France next week.
