HAGEN, Germany, Sept. 9, 2021–Jessica von Bredow-Werndl and TSF Dalera BB, the double Olympic gold medal rider, captured the Eutropean Championship individual gold Thursday night, a day after leading Germany to the team title. Isabell Werth on Weihegold OLD took silver and Cathrine Dufour of Denmark on Bohemian earned bronze.
Jessica and the 14-year-old Trakehner mare scored 84.271% in the Grand Prix Special that was the individual competition for the gold. Isabell, dealing with the colic of her Olympic mount Bella Rose, rode Weihegold OLD to a result of 81.702% for silver with Cathrine and Bohemian on 81.079% for bronze.
For Jessica and Dalera this was their fourth gold medal in the past two competitions–team and individual at the Tokyo Olympics at the end of July and now team and individual at this home of the prestigious Horse & Dreams annual tournament. The Freestyle with another gold medal up for grabs is scheduled for Saturday night.
Jessica said that Dalera doesn’t realize the success and “doesn’t care so this is very good. He will be the same; he will love me with or without the medals. That’s more important.”
When they rode into the arena late Thursday night as the last of 30 combinations to qualify for the Special, the huge difference, she said, between the Olympics and the Europeans was the absence of spectators in Tokyo but many in Hagen.
“The mare got bigger and she was really excited,” said Jessica, “she was so on fire. It was a great feeling especially after olymics, she was so fit and energetic.”
For Isabell, the silver medal on the 16-year-old Weihegold, an Oldenburg mare, came after individual golds for the pair at the 2017 and 2019 Europeans as well gold medals at four continental championships from 1991 through 1997.
After the Grand Prix where she focused on performing for the team, she came into the Special motivated by Weihegold.
“I started to forget everything around while Wei was taking me with her,” she said. “I was very happy and thankful she was really enjoying the ride.”
She had been “really nervous” about Bella Rose but she went to the veterinary clinic and the horse “looked like normal” after the surgery.
