DEAUVILLE, France, July 17, 2021–Matthias Alexander Rath and Foundation posted a personal best score to win the CDI3* Grand Prix Freestyle Saturday to log the German pair’s second victory here. Ryan Torkkeli and Sternenwanderer won the Grand Prix Special
Matthias and the 13-year-old Hanoverian scored 76.870% for the win in their third Big Tour musical performance that eclipsed their previous best of 76.075% set in February 2020. The victories this week were the first for the partnership in three years at Big Tour.
Dutch combinations Jill Huijbregts on Enzos Armani placed second on 76.500% and Denise Nekeman on Boston STH in third on 74.505%.
Ryan Torkkeli and Sternenwanderer won the Grand Prix Special for the first CDI victory by the Canadian rider.
Ryan and the 15-year-old Rhinelander gelding scored 69.000% for the win, in the pair’s eighth start in the past two months.
Charlotte Chalvignac on Elise placed second on 68.362% to lead French combinations filling the runner-up through fourth placings.
British riders Laura Tomlinson and Lara Butler that were to have horses in both the Special and the Freestyle withdrew from the competition as “our horses felt uncharacteristically heavy because of the surfaces out here… we put so much time and effort into preparing our dancing partners we do not feel it is right to push them for the sake of one extra test…”
