THERMAL, California, Nov. 13, 2020–Steffen Peters rode Suppenkasper to a personal best score to win the Thermal Desert Dressage CDI3* Grand Prix Friday in their re-launched campaign for a place on America’s team at the Tokyo Olympics that would be the fifth Games for the 56-year-old rider. Anna Buffini in the debut international competition on Davinia la Douce was runner-up.
Steffen of San Diego, California and the 12-year-old KWPN gelding that were on the United States silver medal team at the Tryon World Equestrian Games in 2018, scored 77.413% to eclipse the previous best of 76.869% set in Wellington, Florida in February. Four of the five judges scored the duo about 76% while American 5* judge Janet Foy awarded 82.609%.
Anna of San Diego and FRH Davinia la Douce, a 13-year-old Hanoverian mare, scored 68.565% for runner-up.
Davinia, bought by Anna, 26 years old, in September, had been competed by Anabel Balkenhol of Germany at medium and Big Tour in the past 2 1/2 years.
Anna was the United States Under-25 champion in 2016.
Three-time American Olympian Günter Seidel of Cardiff, California, who also coaches Anna, was third on Equirelle on 68.261%.
Charlotte Jorst of Reno, Nevada and Kastel’s Nintendo won the World Cup Grand Prix on 71.870% with Jan Ebeling of Moorpark, California on Diamond’s Diva second on 68.696%.
