KEYSOE, England, Oct. 9, 2020–Charlotte Dujardin rode Mount St. John Freestyle to victory in the CDI3* Grand Prix Friday with the rider’s highest score since Valegro at the 2016 Olympics and placed second in the international debut of the nine-year-old Gio she found in California four years ago.
Charlotte and Freestyle, an 11-year-old Hanoverian mare (Fidermark x Donnerhall), scored 83.196% for in their second Big Tour competition this year and in Great Britain’s first international dressage event in seven months as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. The last event in Britain was at this same show grounds in mid-March–six CDIs until now were canceled.
Her ride on Freestyle produced nine marks of 10, seven in piaffe/passage movements, and beat the pair’s previous best of 81.956% set in January that was their last CDI before this event. She and Valegro scored 85.071% in the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Grand Prix.
On Gio, the nine-year-old KWPN gelding, Charlotte was second on a score of 79.348% with two of the five judges awarding marks above 80%.
Charlotte bought Gio (Apache x Tango) when the horse and rider Amelie Kovac were a last-minute substitute in a master class the British Olympic individual gold medalist at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics was giving in California. Amelie moved from Europe to California in 2012 and had imported Gio from the Netherlands.
Charlotte was so taken with the horse she bought Gio virtually on the spot. The horse is nicknamed Pumpkin for his bright orange color.
Gareth Hughes on his British team 2019 European Championship team mount Classic Briolinca placed third on a personal best 77.674%. Their previous best was 76.351% logged at the Europeans last year.
Carl Hester, Charlotte’s long time coach, was fourth on En Vogue on 76.500%. The 11-year-old KWPN gelding, owned by Charlotte, was also making its international debut.
