BALVE, Germany, Sept. 18, 2020–Isabell Werth rode her Olympic team gold medal mount Weihegold OLD to a narrow victory over Jessica von Bredow-Werndl on TSF Dalera BB in the Grand Prix Friday, the first leg of the German Championships.
Isabell and the 15-year-old Oldenburg mare, ranked No. 2 in the world, were awarded 81.600% before hundreds of spectators that were allowed into the show grounds in an easing of coronavirus restrictions that had delayed these championships for four months.
Jessica and the 13-year Trakehner mare, elevated to No. 3 in the world this month, scored 81.340%. Dorothee Schneider and Faustus placed third on 78.360%.
Two sets of medals will be awarded in the championships, for the Grand Prix Special scheduled for Saturday and the Freestyle set for Sunday making it the most significant senior championships for Germany this year.
Isabell’s campaign for a fourth straight World Cup victory was derailed for now when when event for Las Vegaes in April was canceled and the Olympics in Tokyo put off for a year.
