WAYNE, Illinois, Aug. 20, 2020–Hannah Irons on Scola Bella became the U.S. 2020 Young Rider champion Thursday, winning the final after a second place finish in the opening round a day earlier.

Hannah of Queenstown, Maryland and the 11-year-old Oldenburg mare scored 73.088% to overtake Katherine Matthews of San Marcos, California on Soliëre, a 16-year-old Hanoverian mare, who had won the first of two competitions to decide the championship. Katherine and Soliëre placed third on 69.461% Thursday, a high enough score combined with her Wednesday result to become reserve champion.

Kayla Kadlubek of Fairfax Station, Virginia on Perfect Step was second on 70.490% Thursday.

Hannah and Scola Bella were on the North American Youth Championships gold medal team in 2019.

The title was the first of 14 national championships decided this week at the annual Festival of Champions,.
