WELLINGTON, Florida, Mar. 13, 2020–Steffen Peters rode Suppenkasper won the CDIO3* Grand Prix Freestyle Friday night, the 11th straight victory this year for the four-time American Olympian seeking a start at the Tokyo Games. Spectators stands were empty as the public was not allowed at the last Friday Night Lights this Global Dressage Festival circuit.
Steffen, who had qualified the 12-year-old KWPN gelding for the World Cup Final in Las Vegas where he won the title 11 years ago but the event was canceled earlier in the day because of the coronavirus pandemic, was awarded 81.535% for the victory as Nations Cup individual gold medalist.
The pair began Big Tour in January 2018 after the horse was acquired as a U.S. team prospect for Tokyo by longtime sponsor Akiko Yamazaki and Jerry Yang of Four Winds Farm from German Olympian Helen Langehanenberg. The duo ran up eight straight wins in 2019.
Yvonne Losos De Muñiz of the Dominican Republic and Aquamarijn placed second on a personal best 78.910%, beating their previous high score of 76.970% set at Global year ago.
Canada’s Brittany Fraser-Beaulieu on All In was third on 78.720%, surpassing the pair’s previous best of 76.990% posted at Global in March 2018.
The USA’s Adrienne Lyle riding Harmony’s Duval in the American-bred gelding’s first Big Tour musical performance was fourth on 78.060%.
The CDI3* Grand Prix Freestyle was won by Sabine Schut-Kery on Sanceo, for a double victory having taken the Grand Prix earlier.
Sabine of Thousand Oaks, California and the 14-year-old Hanoverian stallion scored 76.415% in the sixth start for the duo this year following eight months away from competition.
Masanao Takahashi of Japan on Rubicon Unitechno placed second on 74.420% with Bianca Tota of Wellington on Cadento V third on 72.260%.
Nations Cup team medals were presented to open Friday Night Stars, the last of the events for 2020 as the Global winter circuit ends after 10 weeks due to efforts to combat coronavirus.
