BAWLEY POINT, Australia, Feb. 26, 2020–Australia’s five-time Olympian Mary Hanna rode Calanta to victory at the Willinga Park Dressage by the Sea CDI4* Grand Prix Wednesday on the highest Grand Prix score ever for the rider and two days after posting a lifetime high in winning the Freestyle at the previous week’s Big Tour event.

Mary, who has competed at five Olympics for Australia and is seeking to go to Tokyo for her sixth Games, scored 72.761% for the win on the 13-year-old KWPN mare. The previous high score for Mary, 65 years old, and Umbro was 72.521% in Orange, Australia in 2015.

The performance in two weeks of CDI4* competitions, the highest ranked events staged Down Under, came after a Grand Prix Freestyle score of 76.205% that was a career high for Mary.

New Zealand’s Melissa Galloway, 26 years old, on Windermere J’Obei W was second on 70.087% in only their second CDI Grand Prix, the first a week earlier with a result of 69.174%.

The ride on the New Zealand-bred nine-year-old gelding that was also their second competition outside her homeland could have scored considerably higher except for a mistake in the first extended trot that was awarded three marks of four, one of 4.5 and one of 5.5 from the judges, and relatively low marks for piaffe.

John Thompson, also of New Zealand, on JHT Chemistry was third on 69.087% in only the fifth start for the eight-year-old Australian-bred horse.
