BAWLEY POINT, Australia, Feb. 22, 2020–Mary Hanna, a five-time Olympian for Australia, rode Calanta to victory and Syriana to runner-up in the Willinga Park Dressage by the Sea CDI4* Saturday.
The score of 70.696% for Calanta, 13-year-old KWPN mare, was a personal best while the result of 70.065% for Syriana, a 14-year-old Westfalen mare, was the only other mark above 70% in the highest rated competition Down Under.
Mary, at 65 years of age with both the first and second highest ranked Australian combinations on the world rankings on Syriana and Calanta, is now back in Australia fulltime after commuting between Australia and Europe for several years.
Melissa Galloway of New Zealand on the Windermere J’Obei W placed third on 69.174%. The 27-year-old rider and her New Zealand-bred nine-year-old have never competed internationally outside their homeland.
No Australian combination other than Mary Hanna and her two mounts met the requirement of 69% as a qualifying score for consideration for the team for the Tokyo Olympics. However, many top combinations were not in the lineup following unprecedented brush fires that devastated huge swathes of the east coast of Australia.
