Steffen Peters and Suppenkasper have only one more competition to go that could earn the rider a return to Las Vegas where 11 years ago he became only the second American World Cup champion.
At the Adequan Global Dressage Festival in Wellington, Florida Steffen and the 12-year-old KWPN gelding earned the second of three scores required and put the pair at the top of the World Cup North American League standings for one of its two starting places at the Final.
The main mission in Wellington is selection for the Tokyo Olympic team that, if successful, would be his fifth.
For Suppenkasper owner Akiko Yamazaki whose other Olympic mounts for Steffen have been Ravel in 2008 and 2012 and Legolas in 2016, Tokyo is for family as well as the United States. Her mother, who lives there, visited the Games when they were held in Tokyo in 1964.
Steffen returns to his San Diego, California home after Global’s CDI5* in mid-February which will be pivotal in selection for the Tokyo team. Meantime, he can the earn third World Cup score in Wellington Feb. 5-9.
In addition to the World Cup title won on Ravel at Las Vegas in 2009, Steffen has competed in four other of the annual world championships based on the Freestyle, two in Las Vegas, one in Omaha and one at ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands.
The only other winner of the World Cup title was Debbie McDonald, now the U.S. team coach, on Brentina in 2003.
