South Africa on Friday completed a special qualifier for a dressage team start at the Olympics next year but still needs to earn some high enough scores by year’s end to become the 15th and last nation to go to Tokyo. If successful, the dressage team would be the nation’s first in more than a century of Olympic equestrian competition.
The four South African rider and horse combinations made up the only country with a team entered in the CDI3* Grand Prix at Exloo, Netherlands that was a special Olympic qualifier for the group of 34 in Africa and the Middle East.
Tanya Seymour, 35, and Ramoneur, 17-year-old Oldenburg stallion, that competed at the 2016 Rio as an individual and the first Olympic equestrian from South Africa, was the highest scoring member of the team Friday on 67.065%.
Nicole Smith, 28, on Chi La Rou, 13-year-old KWPN mare scored 64.913%, Gretha Ferreira, 30, on Lertevangs Lavinia, 14-year-old Danish Warmblood mare, were awarded 63.652% and Laurienne Dittmann, 48, on Don Weltino K, 13-year-old Hanoverian gelding, 62.239%.
Jeanine Nieuwenhuis of the Netherlands on TC Athene won the Grand Prix on a score of 70.609%, the first Big Tour start for the 24-year-old rider and the 14-year-old gelding.
Jeanine and Athene swept the European Under-25 Championships three months ago to cap five years of youth competition victories including the 2016 European Young Rider Championships.
Michelle Hagman Hassink of Sweden on Chagall H was second on 70.370% and Holland’s Lynne Maas on Eastpoint third on 69.652%.
For South Africa, Tanya on Ramoneur and Gretha on Lertevangs Lavinia are the only two pairs to have already attained the Minimum Eligibility Requirements of two Grand Prix scores of 66% this year.
The team start now depends on Laurienne on Don Weltino K with one score or Nicole on Chi La Rou with none so far to meet the 66% threshhold twice by Dec. 31 to validate the team start.
This special qualifier was designed to fill the maximum of 15 teams of three combination at Tokyo next July.
Australia, Bazil, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Great Britain, Ireland, Netherlands, Portugal, Russia, Spain, Sweden and the United States as well as host nation Japan have claimed 14 of the slots.
Fifteen individual places will be determined by next June.
