ROTTERDAM, Netherlands, Aug. 22, 2019–Isabell Werth and Bella Rose won European Championship individual gold with a personal best Grand Prix Special score Thursday night, with team mate Dorothee Schneider on Showtime FRH taking silver and Denmark’s Cathrine Dufour on Cassidy capturing bronze.
Isabell and the 15-year-old mare were awarded 86.520% that included 73 marks of 10 from the seven judges, including three across the board for the final centerline piaffe, transition and passage and then seven more for rider position.
The victory for Isabell on Bella Rose was the rider’s eighth European individual medal and for the combination the 20th straight win going back to November 2014 before 3 1/2 years out of competition with a hard-to-diagnose injury to the Westfalen mare now 15 years old.
Dorothee was emotional with the return to top form for Showtime to win silver on 85.456%, also a personal best. It was also the rider’s first individual medal in any international competition–though she won team gold at the Rio Olympics in 2016, team silver at London in 2012, team gold at Tryon World Equestrian Games last year and team gold at the 2017 Europeans.
Cathrine Dufour, the popular Danish rider and Cassidy, her 2017 European Championship double bronze medal partner, was having her groom take the braids from the horse and put him away when she found out they had won bronze on 81.337%, it, too, a personal best.
Ireland’s Judy Reynolds on Vancouver K, her 17-year-old partner at Olympics, World Equestrian Games and other championships and that she led her nation’s team in the Grand Prix Tuesday to earn a start at the 2020 Tokyo Games, joined the personal best group with 78.252% to place fifth.
The competition stretched from mid-afternoon late into the night with 30 starting combinationsthat qualified through the Grand Prix. The top 15 move on to the Grand Prix Freestyle Saturday night. However, as only three from a nation can go on, Isabell and Bella Rose, Dorothee and Showtime and Jessica von Bredow-Werndl on TSF Dalera BB will ride musical performances while Sönke Rothenberger on Cosmo–the Freestyle silver medal duo from the 2017 Europeans and one of only five combinations to ever score at least 90% in the Freestyle–will be absent Saturday.
The final result was not a foregone conclusion.
As Isabell and Bella Rose rode after them, the scoreboards showed Dorothee and Showtime ahead until the final centerline and the number of 10s on the score sheet for the world’s No. 1 partnership was mind-boggling.
“I know that with Bella Rose everything is possible and it is up to me to make it happen,” Isabell said. She made it happen.
“The piaffe/passage could not be better than it was tonight, the feeling was outstanding and the atmosphere was really special!”
And she joked about the ages of the gold and silver medalists–both Isabell and Dorothee are 50 years old.
“Back to the future: Now the two old women have won,” Isabell joked with Dorothee sitting beside her.
Dorothee described her result as “the greatest day of my life” in winning her first individual international competition medal on a horse she has been developing for the past 10 years, including on the German gold medal team at the 2016 Olympics as a team mate of Isabell and Weihegold. But Showtime has been on-again, off-again with injuries that kept them off the German team for the World Games in Tryon last year.
“It is very emotional after a long break that Showtime comes back in amazing form,” said the rider who is widely admired for her talent and humility.
Spain’s Beatriz Ferrer-Salat and Delgado, the 2015 European Championship Freestyle bronze medal pair, were eliminated from the competition when the 18-year-old Westfalen gelding that is in his 10th year of Big Tour competition appeared uneven in the final extended trot. Beatriz and Delgado were held up for 10 minutes from their scheduled starting time when an awards ceremony for another discipline in the main dressage arena went too long.
It was the fifth elimination from the 69 combinations that started in these Europeans.
