ROTTERDAM, Netherlands, Aug. 19, 2019–Germany, to no one’s surprise, took a commanding lead after the first day of the European Championships team Grand Prix with Great Britain and Sweden in early silver and bronze medal positions. Denmark, Portugal and Switzerland were in front for the three Olympic berths.
Dorothee Schneider on Showtime FRH was the individual leader on 80.233% while Jessica von Bredow-Werndl on TSF Dalera BB was second on 76.894% with the top guns Isabell Werth on Bella Rose and Sönke Rothenberger on Cosmo to got Tuesday that barring anything unforeseen should see Germany claim their 24th team title.
“Showtime was two years out, but at the beginning of this year we started him again and he’s getting better and better,” Dorothee said. “In his concentration he was very good at the German Championships (in June) and he was very, very good in Aachen (in July) so it’s very emotional for me to have this horse under me again, and to feel how motivated he is!”
Gareth Hughes on Classic Briolinca posted a personal best 76.351% for third place individually and, again, with Charlotte Dujardin on Mount St. John’s Freestyle and Carl Hester on Hawtins Delicato likely to put Great Britain on the medals podium, even if not at the top as the country was at the 2011 Europeans here.
“She’s had her injuries as well, she’s had a stop-start career at Grand Prix so she’s still quite inexperienced,” Gareth said of the 13-year-old KWPN mare, “but we’ve had a good season up to this.
“She suffers sometimes from nerves, she’s usually not very good at halting or walking, but today she was excellent, she was focused so I just had to point, keep her head up and use my leg when I needed to, and she took care of the rest!”
Therese Nilshagen on Dante Weltino OLD, one of the stars for Sweden at the 2017 Europeans, was fourth individually on 75.466%.
Hans Peter Minderhoud and Glock’s Dream Boy was the best for the home team with 75.295% to place fifth individually.
Despite the shirt sleeves weather, the first day of the championships did not bring out big crowds.
Denmark, as widely predicted, took the lead in the team competition that will decide three places at the Tokyo Olympics next year. Portugal and Switzerland were lying in second and third, respectively.
The other nations competing for the final three places at Tokyo are Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Ireland and Luxembourg.
The three teams that qualify Tuesday will join Germany, USA, Great Britain, Sweden, Netherlands, Spain, Russia, Canada, Brazil and Australia in Tokyo, as well as Japan as the host.
