ERMELO, Netherlands, Aug. 4, 2019–The World Young Horse Championships for six-year-olds was won by Zucchero, an Oldenburg stallion, ridden by Frederic Wandres of Germany Sunday with 2018 champion Revolution with Andreas Helgstrand taking silver and on Zhaplin Langholt the bronze. The third-placed horse is owned by America’s Charlotte Jorst.

The winner was awarded a total of 9.66 points with Revolution on 9.44 and Zhaplin Langholt with 9.34.

Frederic said that after two fourth place finishes at these championships, the victory was “very special” because he had such a good relationship with Zucchero that he had partnered since the age of three.

Zucchero (Zonik x Prince Thatch) was described by Christoph Hess of Germany on behalf of the four-judge panel, as “amazing” and the last of 15 combinations in the lineup “very close to what we want to see in a horse at this level.”

The trot was “lovely, lovely with a lot of suspension, good self-carriage,” and praised Frederic for managing Zucchero when he became too strong. 9.7. For the walk that was relaxed it was 9.4 while the canter showed the horse the “closest to perfection” of the group and received 9.7, the same for submission which perspective for a future dressage horse 9.8.

Andreas who rode Revolution to the five-year-old title a year ago, said he was a “bit sad” to have missed some of the changes and a submission score of 8.8 that cost him the possibility of double gold.

Revolution received 10 for the trot and 9.6 for the canter.

He explained that Charlotte Jorst of Reno, Nevada, had bought Zhaplin Langholt, a Danish Warmblood gelding, and took the horse to Wellington, Florida for the winter circuit.

However, Andreas said, she wanted more training for her and the horse (Zonik x Stedinger) so took him back to Denmark. When she wanted to return to America with Zhaplin Langholt, she dismissed the idea of allowing him to compete at the championships but he eventually talked her into it because the experience would be valuable.

He described the horse as “very powerful” with an “unbelievable engine.”
