HICKSTEAD, England, July 27, 2019–João Miguel Torrao rode Equador to a personal best score to dominate the Nations Cup Grand Prix Special Saturday and clinch Portugal’s first victory in seven years of the official team series. The event will not be formally decided until the Grand Prix Freestyle Sunday, but Portugal has an insurmountable lead in only its second Nations Cup competition.
João’s 75.787% on the 10-year-old Lusitano stallion came a day after the pair scored a personal best in the Grand Prix that led Portugal to the lead in the finale of the eight-event trans-Atlantic series. Team mate Duarte Nogueira on Beirao placed second in the Special on 71.851% that locked up the title.
Rodrigo Torres on Fogoso who placed third in the Grand Prix will represent Portgual in the Freestyle.
The standings are decided by placings–Portugal led after the Grand Prix with 12 points, with Great Britain on 15, the Netherlands on 23 and Ireland on 30.
The Netherlands’ Lucie Louws on Evito placed third in the Special on 68.723%.
Sara Gallop on Bandero was fourth and Emile Faurie on Cafe’s Caletta sixth to prevent Great Britain from moving closer to Portugal.
Portugal competed in this same event a year ago, the country’s first Nations Cup in the seven years of the series.
The series champion is Sweden for the third year in a row based on points accumulated in its best four competitions in the lineup that began in Wellington, Florida in March before moving across the Atlantic to Europe.
The top three nations for 2019 now appear certain to be Sweden first, Germany second and the United States third.
Finland’s Mikaela Soratie rode Dacor to victory in the CDI3* Grand Prix Special on a score of 68.511%.
Great Britain’s Emile Faurie on Quentano placed second on 68.489% with Lara Butler on Kristjan third on 68.213%.
