GEESTEREN, Netherlands, June 23, 2019–The Netherlands narrowly won the CDIO3* Nations Cup gold Sunday, staving off a Swedish team mostly logging personal best scores to take silver after drawing even with one competition remaining. Great Britain captured bronze and the USA was fourth.
Edward Gal on Glock’s Zonik led the home side to victory by winning the Grand Prix Freestyle on 82.250%, the third phase of the Nations Cup and after leading the Grand Prix in the first stage of the two-day competition.
The freestyle win came after the Ramel sisters pulled Sweden’s all-female team even with the Netherlands in the Grand Prix Special.
Juliette Ramel and Buriel K.H. posted a personal best score of 79.915% to win the Special while her sister, Antonia Ramel on Brother de Jeu were third on 74.660%, also a personal best.
Therese Nilshagen on Dante Weltino OLD, 12-year-old Oldenburg stallion on Sweden’s Tryon World Equestrian Games team and ranked 13th in the world, was runner-up in the Freestyle with a personal best 81.495%.
Juliette and Buriel, 13-year-old KWPN gelding, ranked No. 23 in the world, were on Sweden’s team at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro and at the 2018 WEG to help earn a start for the nation at the Tokyo Games next year.
The Netherlands’ Emmelie Scholtens on Desperado placed second on 76.170%, the debut Special for Emmelie and the 11-year-old KWPN stallion that have been partnered in international competition since the World Young Horse Championships in 2013.
Final scores based on placings of the top three scoring combinations in each team: 1. Netherlands 17 points; 2. Sweden 19; 3. Great Britain 48; 4. USA 61; 5. France 65; 6. Belgium 85.
Sweden, champion of the trans-Atlantic series the past two years, remains atop the standings with 31 points after four of eight Nations Cup competitions, with Great Britain second on 28, the United States third on 27 and Netherlands fourth with 19.
The next Nations Cup in is the CDIO4*-NC in Järvenpää, Finland July 5-7, that will be a first-time host.
