WIESBADEN, Germany, June 9, 2019–Ingrid Klimke, among the world’s top event riders, won the CDI4* Grand Prix Freestyle on Franziskus with the highest dressage score of her career and the first above 80%.
The 51-year-old daughter of the late great Reiner Klimke, rode the 11-year-old Hanoverian stallion to a score of 80.680%, beating the pair’s previous best musical performance result of 78.595% set in Hagen, Germany in April. Her highest ever dressage score was 79.350% on Dresden Mann. also in the Hagen CDI4*, in 2015.
Ingrid, who has made no secret of her goal of competing for Germany in dressage at an Olympics, had ridden Franziskus to a personal best score in Grand Prix Saturday. The double victory was the first for the duo since a pair of win in their Big Tour debut at Munich 18 months ago. In 2014, the pair competed in the World Championships for six-year-old dressage horses.
Sönke Rothenberger on Santiano R, an 11-year-old German Sport Horse gelding, was second on 80.040% in only the pair’s second CDI event. Sönke, 24 years old, is an Olympic and World Equestrian Games German team gold medalist on Cosmo, the horse on which he one of only five riders in history to score above 90% in the Freestyle.
Fellow German Anja Plönzke on Tannenhof’s Fahrenheit was third on 76.360%
Ingrid is the daughter of the late Reiner Klimke who amassed eight Olympic medals in dressage, third behind the 10 won so far by Germany’s Isabell Werth and nine by Anky van Grunsven of the Netherlands.
In five Olympics, Ingrid has won two team gold medals and one silver as well as two fourth places, two team golds in competing at four World Equestrian Games plus an individual bronze at Tryon last fall as well as three team European Championship golds, and individual gold, silver and bronzes. She was world eventing champion in 2016.
She rode in the 2002 World Cup Final.
