WELLINGTON, Florida, Mar. 2, 2019–Kathy Priest of the United States rode her Damon’s Fantasy to victory in the Iron Spring Farm Future Stars Performance Series Saturday while Cheryl Roberts on Famous Forever became the second Canadian to qualify to the final at the Global Dressage Festival at the end of March.
Kathy of Versailles in the heart of Kentucky’s bluegrass and the eight-year-old black Oldenburg mare scored 72.125 per cent in the USEF Developing Prix St. Georges that is being used in the series sponsored by Iron Spring Farm of Coatesville, Pennsylvania and supported by Cunningham & Cunningham Livestock insurance and Legacy Farm in Loxahatchee, Florida operated by Melissa Taylor and Lars Petersen.
This was the ninth of 10 competitions to qualify for the $10,000 series final to be staged in Global’s centerpiece international arena at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center at the end of the winter circuit. The last qualifier for horses aged seven to nine years of age is scheduled for next Saturday, Mar. 16.
Damon’s Fantasy was sired by Damon Hill, the Westfalen stallion ridden by Helen Langehanenberg of Germany to team medals at the 2012 Olympics and the 2014 World Equestrian Games and was 2013 World Cup champion. The damsire was Florencio 2.
Canada’s Cheryl Roberts and the nine-year-old KWPN gelding Famous Forever (Ampere x Hero) as runner-up also qualified for the final.
Kathy Priest is the sixth American to earn an invitation to the final of the series that is loosely based on the format of Germany’s Nürnberger Burg-Pokal for small tour horses aged seven to nine years old. Two riders from Canadan, two from Germany, one from the Dominican Republic, an Australian and a Swiss have so far qualified.
The series was introduced by Global for the first time this year as a national level competition with the aim of keeping showing costs to a minimum.
Once the first two combinations in any competition qualify, riders and horses next in line are offered an invitation to the final.
The last of the qualifying Future Stars Performance Series competitions remaining for this winter circuit is scheduled for Global Dressage Festival 10 Mar. 13-17.
